Wailea Fairway Villas provides multiple locations throughout the complex for the disposal of waste and recyclables. The map of the complex on our maps page shows the locations of each enclosure and what kind of waste is accepted. Trash, green waste, and cardboard recycling all use the same kind of dumpster, so please check to make sure you are using the correct one. All other recycling goes into the designated bins. Maui does not provide “single-stream” recycling. Please do not mix recyclables or put recyclables in a different bin because the designated one is full.

Trash Disposal Guidelines

Only household trash is allowed in trash dumpsters. Hazardous waste,  remodeling waste, appliances, furniture, mattresses, TV’s & other electronics are not allowed. Such items need to be taken to the County Dump or other designated area off property. The Maui County Residential Recycling Guide A-Z provides useful information on various kinds of waste, what may be recyclable, and instructions for disposal. Note that contrary to some County online resources, pet waste and animal carcasses up to 25 pounds in weight may be disposed of in the trash.

Recycling Guidelines

You can review Maui County’s recycling guidelines posted on their official web site. Here is a brief summary:

  • Cardboard: all standard corrugated cardboard and chipboard is accepted, including paper bags and “molded pulp” used for paper-based egg cartons. Please break down, cut, or flatten every size of box. Cardboard with food stains/residue, such as pizza boxes, and wax-coated cardboard such as milk and juice cartons are not allowed.
  • Glass: all glass, any color is accepted. Please discard lids and corks, and rinse clean. No need to remove labels.
  • Newspaper: newspaper/newsprint, including inserts, is accepted. Magazines, mixed paper, “junk” mail, and shredded paper are not allowed.
  • Plastic bottles: only bottles with necks and stamped with a #1 or #2 are allowed. Please discard caps and step on them to make them flat. No other plastics are allowed, regardless of whether they are marked with a #1 or #2, including food tubs, clam shells, plastic wrap, trays, eating utensils, and cereal box inserts.

Wailea Fairway Villas does not provide aluminum and bi-metal recycling pickup pickup in order to avoid “dumpster diving” from nonresidents going through our trash, but you are encouraged to bring these recyclables to a Maui County Recycling Drop Off Center. The closest is the Welakahao recycling center just off Pi’ilani Highway.

Please do not be an “optimistic recycler,” also called a “Wish-cycler.” This is someone who tries to recycle anything that might be recyclable. Doing so actually increases the likelihood that valid recyclables will not get recycled. For instance, if food waste is found in cardboard recyclables, the entire container may be considered contaminated and the entire load will be thrown into a landfill. Regarding plastics, these are not pre-sorted and are sold in bulk to parties that seek to recycle them. If there are too many “unacceptable” plastics in a load, the buyer will refuse to purchase the load, and the entire load, even if it it mostly acceptable recyclables, will get thrown into a landfill. Please follow the rule, “When in doubt, throw it out!” Which is to say, if you aren’t sure whether something is recyclable, it is better to throw it in the trash than to put it into recycling and hope for the best. In the end, much more will be recycled.

Green Waste Disposal Guidelines

Dumpsters marked as “Yard Waste” are for the sole use of the landscaping team for disposing “Green Waste.” No other items are permitted in these dumpsters. Please do not put garbage or recycling in the green waste dumpsters.
